Health and Safety Video – Tumelo Coal Mines
We were tasked with the production of a Health and Safety Induction training video for Tumelo Coal Mine. Tumelo operates an underground coal mine in South Africa. They are a leading South African coal mining company with a deep running history. Tumelo Coal Mine forms a part of Exxaro Coal Centre (ECC) and is based in Mpumalanga. The mine has been active since 2009, and has played a significant role in the economy of the country, specifically around any industry that leverages coal for operations. One of the main reasons we were awarded this project was due to our extensive experience filming health and safety videos as well as filming underground. Let’s highlight the challenges that came with this project:
Underground filming – Underground conditions required our team to film with limited lighting, which our team had to provide. This meant provisioning for additional lighting equipment, batteries and stands. Filming underground also adds unique considerations for optimal conditions, like managing lens fog and other unique equipment conditions. Our team also had to keep their overall equipment profile as small as possible in order to ensure every shot was taken in optimal conditions.
Confined Spaces – Filming underground requires a unique set of skills, which comes from experience. The coal mine was no different, our team was required to film in extremely confined spaces throughout the mine. This meant our team had to keep their equipment as mobile as possible while being on constant standby for shot opportunities. When filming underground your shoot needs to be planned well in advance as operations cannot be disrupted while underground.
Dust and Debris/Noise and Vibration – Filming underground always presents difficult conditions that may vary constantly. This required a team that understood the nuances involved in prepping for every potential obstacle to ensure no shot opportunities were missed.
PPE – Prior to filming our team had to go through a full induction process. During this training they were fitted with the correct PPE for the hazards involved in such harsh underground conditions. The required oxygen packs, hard hats with battery and light packs, safety shoes, hearing protection, ear plugs and eye protection to name but a few.
Preparation – Prior to entering the mine our team of videographers were required to go through comprehensive medical testing to ensure they were adequately healthy for the environment. These tests are a vital tool used to reduce the potential for accidents underground. The harsh environment may result in aggravation of existing medical conditions which results in compromised team members and a much higher chance for accidents to occur.
Tumelo Coal Mine entrusted us with this project, because we had such an extensive portfolio of industry specific Health and Safety videos for the mining sector. It was a pleasure working with their team, every element of the video was well-planned and organised, ensuring our teams were as safe as possible throughout the project, without compromising on filming opportunities.
