Health and Safety Video

At Sound Idea Digital we have a passion for video production and business. Every new client we work with teaches us more about the rest of the world. In our three decades of business, we have been through mining operations, abattoirs, factories, production lines and corporate offices alike. Even in the same industries, companies still find their own path to productivity. No two businesses are the same, even if they do the same thing, so to speak.

We were commissioned by Komatsu Southern Africa, based in Germiston, Johannesburg, to produce a Health and Safety Induction Training Video. The project kicked off with a meeting to plan the video and following shoot dates. During the process of planning the video, we learned a great deal about Komatsu’s operations, which highlighted new opportunities for filming.

Komatsu’s health and safety induction training had to be split into two videos, namely Panels and Hydraulics. Each division had very specific equipment, processes and teams – this meant we had to approach each division with the a different strategy and team. As we analyzed the two divisions we identified even more specialised training – this included working at heights, confined spaces and high pressure – to name a few.

Komatsu’s initial plan was to have a singular Health and Safety Induction Training Video for each division, however upon conclusion of our initial planning, it was determined the training video could be repurposed into two separate videos. This also meant a lot of additional planning had to be done, which required an increased commitment by the Komatsu team to ensure we could maximise the production value of each video by planning every potential shot in advance. This enabled us to produce a comprehensive shot list which allowed us to truly make the most out of each of the two filming days. Due to the project specifications expanding we had to also identify a strategy to keep the additional videos within budget. One way we did this is by using an in-house team member for the voice narration of each video. We also recorded the voice in our studio, along with the design team who produced all the video templates and graphics in advance. This allowed the Komatsu team to peruse each draft and element of production without causing any additional delays. This ensured we could meet their deadlines, despite producing considerably more video content.
