Animation – Villa
We were tasked to produce a series of 2D Character Animation Training Videos, for Villa, a project sponsored by USAID. The goal of the project was to train small-scale farmers on how to protect their crops from the invasive Fall Army Worm. As early as 2016 there have been reports of the Fall Army Worm decimating crops across the African continent. Due to the complex nature of the pest, detailed training needed to be developed to aid small-scale farmers across the continent with this invasion.
The process started with kick-off meeting with the Villa team and chosen Fall Army Worm experts. During this meeting we developed a strategy for developing 10 2D Character Animation Training Videos. We decided on 2D Character Animation as it is easy to update, re-purpose and presents the training in a fun and engaging manner. To test our theory, we created a prototype video which was presented to a series of focus groups. Based on the overwhelmingly positive results, we knew our strategy would be effective.
The script writing was done in conjunction with the team of experts, each script went through multiple drafts to ensure our scripts were accurate and it for video. To make the most of the client’s budget we used an in-house voice artist, who was recorded in our studio. The only exception was for the additional 10 French video translations, where we used a female Congolese voice artists. We also developed all the design and motion graphics to keep the videos uniform and on brand. By using 2D Character Animation we could easily update and repurpose the videos in different languages. With the current batch of videos being translated into French for use in the DRC.
The great thing about 2D Character Animation is that it is an incredibly versatile medium, which means the videos could easily be repurposed into eLearning training modules that plug straight into any SCORM-compliant Learning Management System. The medium also allows us to adapt the video settings to match the country’s geography, this keeps the training relevant regardless of the country it is presented in. The training videos have been a great success, with many small-scale farmers equipped with the knowledge to fight and prevent the Fall Army Worm scourge.
This project was so successful we were tasked with developing the videos into 3 more translations, namely: Lingala, Swahili and Tshibula.
