Documentary Video – Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung
Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Southern Africa Documentary Video Production
We were tasked with the production of a documentary video by the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Southern Africa organisation, which is a non-profit focused on emphasising public awareness, enlightenment and socio-economic critique. The video was focused on covering the modern day environmental challenges within the Kavango region of Namibia. This region is home to the Kavango river which houses a unique ecosystem, along with several species of protected animals. The region is rich in resources, which posed a unique challenge from an environmental perspective. On one side you need the money to provide the infrastructure to maintains these environments but on the other hand, this cannot be done in a manner that is damaging to the surroundings and their inhabitants.
For this project we travelled and filmed across Namiba. In order to film a documentary across borders you must have an experienced team with the right equipment. Your team must be small, light and nimble. When travelling and filming, there are additional costs involved for every team member, so you need a dynamic team that can handle themselves throughout various scenarios. You also cannot bring large and heavy equipment with you as travelling, especially by plane limits your storage space. Another important element is your teams ability to work with different cultures. Understanding how to handle a video shoot in a foreign country with individuals of completely different cultures is a big challenge that takes years to perfect. Luckily our team has been filming across borders for over twenty years.
For the narration of the video we opted for a dual-narration style. This combines traditional voice overs with interviews where the voice of the interview takes over narration from topic to topic. This style of narration allows us to piggyback the interviews as part of the voice recording, it also means you maintain credibility on the topic as the subject matter expert is the one presenting it. Our in-house narration is provided by one of our team members, she was recorded in our recording studio. All audio engineering was handled by our design team, who played a vital role in maintaining the integrity of the audio. This is especially important when using multiple narrations recorded under different circumstances.
It was a pleasure working on this project, our team learned a ton about the Kavango region and the history of Namibia.
