And Then There Was Light…for Photography

When it comes to lighting equipment for photography, form follows function. It’s important to understand the basics of lighting and how different equipment can be used in different types of photography shoots. As a general rule, three-point lighting is a good starting point for most shoots; this involves having two lights that act as your key light and fill light and one backlight that helps to separate the subject from the background. Lastly, always experiment with flashes and gels to create dramatic lighting effects or unique color compositions. With time and practice you will become an expert when it comes to selecting and using the right lighting gear!

Lighting is one of the most important components in photography. Whether you are shooting an indoors or outdoors, natural or artificial light, the quality and direction of light can make all the difference when it comes to capturing the perfect shot. To ensure a successful photo shoot, it is important to select the right lighting equipment for your needs. Professional photographers often opt for studio strobes and powerful ring lights for highly controlled lighting environments, whereas seasoned hobbyists often use softboxes, umbrellas and other modifiers to soften and propogate light. No matter what type of lighting gear you choose, it’s important to always keep an eye on control settings like color temperature and exposure length to get your desired look in each shot.

The facilities to power lighting equipment may not be available in most outdoor areas, so we have to work with what we have: natural light. Fortunately, we have the necessary equipment that makes the most of natural lighting without using a single volt of electricity.

Our go-to equipment for filming and photography outdoors is using a reflector. A reflector is a piece of reflective material that comes in different colours, shapes and sizes. Natural light bounces off the reflector and onto the subject, creating the perfect shot. Reflectors can be used indoors too; for diffusing artificial light – including strobe lights and the flash of the camera.  They can be folded into a compact size that can be carried from place to place with ease.

Reflectors add a vast amount of quality to videos and photography. They make the most of natural lighting without using a single volt of electricity
